Arsenal vs West Ham United

Arsenal host West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. A win will see the Gunners reach their first semi-final in the competition since 2011.

Winning won’t be easy, though, not after the way David Moyes has revived the Hammers since succeeding Slaven Bilic as manager.

Moyes has guided his side to a crucial 1-0 win over Chelsea, a goalless draw with Arsenal and a 3-0 victory at Stoke City in the Premier League to lift the Hammers out of the bottom three.

West Ham had been showing good form in this competition before Moyes arrived, coming back from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in the previous round.

Whatever its guise, this remains the one domestic trophy Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hasn’t claimed during his career. Even without a win, deep progress was once common, with the Frenchman losing two finals and guiding the Gunners to numerous semi-final appearances.

However, Arsenal have found the going tougher in recent seasons, losing twice to Southampton, as well as to Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea since 2011.

Wenger prefers to play refreshed teams in the tournament, usually with an emphasis on youth. The policy saw 18-year-old striker Eddie Nketiah score twice to beat Norwich City in the previous round.

It was a match where Wenger moved midfielder Mohamed Elneny into defence while playing right-back Mathieu Debuchy as a centre-back. A similar approach may be needed this time, depending on what formation the manager deploys, with the Frenchman switching from three at the back to a back four for Arsenal’s last two matches in the Premier League.
